Prescription drugs are useful for many of us. We need them to help recover from surgery, fractures and breaks, anxiety, and many other medical issues. However, there are certain drugs which tend to make people more vulnerable to dependence. There is surely a crisis in our country at the moment. Watch out for signs you or a loved one may have a prescription drug dependence.
What Exactly Is Drug Dependence?
Prescription drug abuse refers to using prescription medications in a way other than how they were prescribed. This could include using them longer than prescribed, taking more than prescribed, going to another physician to get the same medication, and telling your doctor you need a stronger dose.
The most commonly misused drugs include:
- Opioids used to prevent pain like medications containing oxycodone, oxycontin, Percocet, fentanyl
- Anti-anxiety or sedation medications like Xanax, Valium, Ambien, which treat anxiety and sleep disorders
- Stimulants like Ritalin, amphetamines like Adderall, and Dexedrine for ADHD and sleep disorders
Physical Signs of Drug Dependence
Look for bloodshot eyes, pupils larger or smaller than normal, changes in appetite, sleep patterns and physical appearance. Notice unusual smells on breath, body, plus impaired coordination.
Behavioral Signs
- Wanting early refills of drugs and seeing multiple physicians
- Frequent bathroom breaks and a constantly changing work schedule
- Leaving home at odd hours and a drop in attendance and performance at work or school
- Sudden change in friends, hangouts, and hobbies
- Secretive and suspicious behavior
Relationship and Psychological Signs
Denial and anger are often common reactions when confronted. You may notice money issues from buying drugs. Mood swings and changes in personality are common with drug abuse.

It is difficult to acknowledge that YOU may be the one with a prescription drug dependence. You are in denial or think it couldn’t happen to you. After all, these are prescription medications.
